Acupuncture is a form of alternative treatment. It has been in use for centuries in certain parts of the world. In particular in China where it is thought the practice began to be developed from about 100 BC onwards.

During acupuncture therapy, extremely thin needles are inserted into the skin at specific points. They are never slid in far. But the depth depends on what the practitioner is trying to achieve.

There are acupuncture points located all over the body. Our experienced practitioners know the impact stimulating each one is going to have on the person they are treating. This enables them to create a fully customized plan for each one.

The needles used are so fine that most people do not feel them going in or being taken back out. However, it does depend a bit on the individual. Some people are far more sensitive to pain than others. So, you may feel a small prick. But it is no worse than what you experience when you get a shot from your doctor.

Interestingly, a lot of people find their acupuncture sessions to be very relaxing. So much so that some come to us to have sessions as a way of helping them to cope with anxiety and gain relief from stress. This release of tension is part of the reason it works as a way of relieving pain as well.

Although most patients don’t feel any discomfort from the needles, we understand that some people would still rather not have acupuncture because of them. We have even come across people who have a full-blown phobia of needles.

For those people, we offer an alternative in the form of laser therapy. It has a similar impact as acupuncture does but there are no needles involved.

Over the centuries, acupuncture has been used to treat an extensive list of conditions. In our clinics we offer people with the following conditions the chance to undergo this form of treatment:

  • Arthritis
  • Painful knees
  • Persistent headaches
  • Migraines
  • Back pain, in particular, lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Dental pain
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Some respiratory disorders
  • Menstrual pain
  • Nausea
  • Sciatica
  • Tennis elbow
  • Craniomandibular disorders
  • Allergies, in particular, hay fever
  • Addiction
  • Certain non-life-threatening digestive issues
  • Biliary colic

The effectiveness of acupuncture for treating the above conditions varies considerably. Which is why we assess each person when they come to see us. Our first task is to determine how suitable you are for this alternative form of physical therapy.

If you are suffering from other conditions that are not listed here, please don´t let that put you off of getting in touch. We are willing to do some research to see if we can still help you. The above are just the issues we use acupuncture for the most often.

However, we are not suggesting you wait to speak to us. If you have a medical condition it is always wise to be assessed by a doctor before trying alternative treatments. Our service is a complementary one. It is certainly not supposed to be a replacement for the care of your family doctor. Many of whom do refer patients to us, in particular, to try out our pain management service.

It is possible to combine acupuncture with other forms of therapy. Many of which we offer in our Activa Clinics.

Our team is a multi-disciplinary one, which means that we can put together a tailored treatment plan for you. So, we can include a course of acupuncture in the list of therapies we provide for you. Often, it is possible for us to help you using acupuncture alone.

We will discuss all of the options with you including the pros and cons of each one. Ultimately, it is you who decides whether to have acupuncture alone or let us combine it with a course of physiotherapy and maybe massage therapy too.

The number of treatment sessions needed depends on the condition being treated and how bad it is. Someone who has a chronic condition may need to be treated at least once, maybe twice a week. Possibly for several months.

When you arrive at the clinic, we will assess you and give you some idea of how quickly you can expect results. If your symptoms are mild or your condition is simple, it may be that you only need a few sessions. Should we determine that acupuncture is not going to help in your particular case, we will usually be able to offer you other treatment options.

Once you have decided what you want to do, we will book you the relevant appointments. After your treatment, you can expect to feel quite relaxed. A great way to make the most of this is to book your appointments so that you can go home and rest afterwards. You should certainly plan to do this after your first treatment or two to get the most out of them and to be able to assess the impact acupuncture has on you personally.

Later, most people opt to simply go back to work, do their shopping, and generally get on with their day as normal after their sessions. However, you should not plan to do anything too strenuous after having your treatment.

It is a good idea to drink plenty of water. This will help your body to flush away the toxins that can be released during your treatment sessions.

You may feel slightly sore at the point where the needles entered, and some people bruise a little. But it is usually extremely mild and within 24 hours you will not even know you have had acupuncture.

If you are at all bothered by this, we will usually be able to offer you laser therapy instead. But most people opt to continue with their full course of acupuncture treatments.
